Dear AAU Taekwondo Official:

First, I hope that you and your family are all staying healthy and that you are able to continue to find ways to train and stay connected to your home dojang.

The past eight weeks have been full of trying times and uncertainty. Not only for us as individuals, but particularly for the small business owners who make up the fabric of our taekwondo community.

In case you missed it, I announced that nationals, which was supposed to take place July 5th - July 11th in Las Vegas, was postponed and moved; the 2020 Nationals will now take place October 7th - 11th, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in the Arena located at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

We are excited that we could make this change so swiftly and on a holiday weekend with many kids out of school and many parents off of work. As always with our national championships, it takes a village for it to run smoothly and maintain the highest-quality; at the heart of the event is you, the referees!

Having been a referee for almost 30 years, I understand the sacrifices you make and the dedication that you all put into it. I also realize that many of you were not able to get certified as many clinics were not able to take place. To that end, here is what we have decided to do.

  1. There will be three sessions of a three-part clinic that will take place via Zoom and conducted by the national chief referee committee. Everyone wishing to re-certify will be required to attend each session one time. You do not have to do them on the same day, but you must complete them.
  2. All referee certification fees for this year will be waived.
  3. AAU Taekwondo Memberships extended until October 31st, 2020.

This year’s nationals will be looking for approximately 70 to 80 referees who can work the entire event. Registration will be open soon and I encourage you to register as soon as possible.
Finally, I want to assure everyone that the AAU is working closely with Walt Disney World and ESPN’s Wide World of Sports to ensure the safety of athletes, referees, and all volunteers. You have my commitment that we will not do anything that puts you or any of our athletes or staff in harm’s way. If for some reason we cannot make those guarantees, then we will not have the event take place.

Again, I’d like to thank you all for your support- not only during this time, but also for all the years in the past. I wish you and your family health and happiness through this trying time and look forward to seeing you all again in October!

Sincerely,

GM Stone
